And on…….
to my second season in Formula 1. On Saturday the journey began from Zürich via Singapore to Melbourne, where I arrived 24 hours later. The weather here is great. Sunshine and at the weekend it should get up to 39°.
On Monday I had time to drive to the coast and have a look at the countryside around Melbourne. You can get used to the life here. But I'm fully focused on the new Formula 1 season. I’m looking for a good start to the first races and bringing the Force India Team up the rankings together with my team mate Giancarlo Fisichella.
On Wednesday evening I went round the course with my engineers and mechanics. When you walk around the track you tend to see places that you wouldn’t notice otherwise.
I even had to face the water; fortunately, with a canoe. RTL was filming me rowing. It was great fun and a welcome diversion.
Friday and Saturday will put the test times into perspective and reveal who gambled and who didn’t. We will have to wait until Saturday afternoon to find out where the real power lies in f1 2008.
At the front it should be fairly straightforward with Ferrari and Mercedes McLaren, where I think Kimi has the slight edge. Behind them it’s difficult to say and it will certainly vary from circuit to circuit. I think the middle of the pack will be fairly tight this year. There won’t be much between positions 5 and 15.
It won’t be until after the race here in Melbourne that we know where we really stand. The fact is we have improved and there will be more updates over the next few races. What this means in practice will depend to a large extent on how much the others have improved. But we are setting our sights on Q2.
In Giancarlo I have for the first time an experienced team mate with a fast track record. There is no doubt he will help us to move up and I hope I can learn a thing or two from him.
He brings 10 years’ Formula 1 experience to the team, was twice constructors world champion and has won races. He has really strengthened the team and besides that is a decent guy.
Now we’re into the final preparations and press events before tomorrow I finally get into the car. I can’t wait for the weekend.
